1911

Almost the entire history of Audi is somehow based on automobile sports, because at all stages of development of Audi great designers and engineers who created cars, and outstanding athletes who performed on these cars - sought to be the first.

Each high-profile victory on the track contributed to the success of sales of production cars. Each new Audi car created in the last hundred years carries solutions tested in motorsport.

The founder of Audi , the brilliant engineer August Horch , personally participated in the Austrian alpine race 1911 of the year behind the wheel of the production model Audi B10 (28 hp.).

August Horch then didn’t win anything, but he didn’t lose the distance, which was already considered an achievement. Six months later, a new model saw the light - Audi C14 (35 hp). It was she, in 1912 , who won the Alpine prize. After which it became known as Alpensieger - "Vanquisher of the Alps" (German).

By the beginning of the 30s of the last century, when the companies Audi , Horch , Wanderer and DKW merged into the Auto Union concern, motorsport in Europe began to acquire modern features: car factories gained their own teams. In the countries - manufacturers of automobiles, racing tracks were built one after another. Cars designed for competitions began to differ significantly from production ones.

The European public watched the ups and downs of the battle of “silver arrows” - the Grand Prix race car race, the prototype of the current Formula-1.

Hans Stuck , Tazio Nuvolari , Rudolf Hasse , German Muller - the names of the outstanding pilots who played for the team Auto Union , then known to every student. Racing was literally deadly: no belts or airbags had yet been invented.

Tanks of "silver arrows" were seasoned with an infernal mixture of methyl alcohol, acetone, nitrobenzene and ether. In the mid-30s, these cars had more than 400 hp under the hood and developed speeds on the 300 km / h highway.

War and post-war devastation threw European motorsport decades back. The Auto Union sports team, in the form in which it won on European routes until 1939, ceased to exist. Until the beginning of the 80s of the XX century, the Audi brand did not take an active part in sports life.

However, the events of a later period fully offset the three decades of the brand without motorsport.

Rally

Audi Sport

At the very beginning of the 1981 year, the Audi brand broke into the World Rally Championship. Model quattro with 310 hp engine made its debut in the January Rally Austria , which was not taken into account in the world championship. The pilot Franz Wittmann won the first try, ahead of his rivals by more than 20 minutes.

At its first World Rally Championship (WRC) in Monte Carlo, the Audi quattro again demonstrated its superiority. On the snowy track, Hannu Mikkola won the first six special stages, and only an accident could stop him. In the following competitions - Rally Sweden - the Finnish racer won first place.

1982

An unusual chapter in the history of the rally entered Michelle Mouton and Fab Pons . In the 1981 season, Audi pilots became the first female crew to win the WRC race in the world.

Michelle Mouton performed in the most scandalous and fascinating group of WRC - group "B" , which later, after the tragedy of 1986 , when 3 spectators and 2 participants died in accidents at the World Cup in Portugal and in Corsica, the International Motorsport Federation (FIA) banned, because of the great danger to riders and spectators.

In the season 1982 of the year Michelle won the stages in Portugal, Brazil and Greece (Acropolis), which allowed her to take 2nd place in the individual standings of the World Rally Championship. Her teammate became the champion that year - Walter Röhrl . In the final protocol they were separated by only 12 points!

As a result of the 1982 year, the Audi quattro became almost unbeatable: Audi managed to win a record 7 victories in different parts of the world and get the first prize among manufacturers.

1984

In the 1984 year, rally racing reached a new level. Opponents used the extremely liberal rules of the “B” group at that time to exhibit cars with a central engine location on races - extremely functional race cars that had little to do with production models.

In the 1984 year a new rally car Audi was released, called the Sport quattro . From its predecessor, the car was distinguished by a changed appearance and technical equipment. First of all, it became shorter by 30cm, the design of the front part and the inclination of the windshield were changed.

In July 1985 , the Sport quattro was replaced by an evolutionary version - the S1 model, which went down in the history of the rally like a real devil with an indomitable character.

When the driver let go of the gas pedal, exhaust pipes with a growl released meter-long flames of fire. “It's like saddling a bullet,” said Walter Röhrl , “the speed is just explosive. Everything happens so quickly that you do not have time to really realize it. ”

After the successes achieved in the rally, the Audi all-wheel drive demonstrated its advantages on highways. In the 1988 year, the Audi racers tried their hand at the American Series Trans-Am. Under the hood of the Audi 200 quattro was a 5-cylinder turbocharged engine with a capacity of 510 hp , which proved itself at the World Rally Championships.

This car helped the American racer Hurley Heywood to win the championship title. Having achieved 8 victories in 13 races, the Audi brand also became the leader in the standings among car manufacturers.

In 1989 , the Audi team switched to the IMSA GTO series with even more loyal rules. Outwardly, GTO resembled Audi 90 quattro, but under this shell was an uncompromising racing car, the skeleton of which consisted of a carbon-reinforced composite bottom and a tubular frame frame.

The upgraded 5-cylinder engine with an S1 exhaust gas recirculation system developed a capacity of approximately 720 hp , and the wheel width was 36cm. Hans Joachim Stuck won the 3rd place in the championship, having achieved seven victories in 15 races, and the Audi team took the 2nd place among car manufacturers.

1990

In the 1990 year, the Audi racing team switched to the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) with the introduction of its latest V8 quattro with a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated engine with 462 hp and weighing 1290 kg.

Hans-Joachim Stuck won the championship in the first year of participation, and in 1991 the young Frank Biela repeated this achievement in a stunning final race on the ring track in Hockenheim. Audi managed to win in half of all 36 races held in 1990 and 1991.

1996 became Audi the most successful year in touring races. Audi A4 quattro Supertouring with 2-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 296 hp was an ultramodern racing car.

The driver's seat was shifted back, the 6-speed gearbox had smooth shifting, and the aerodynamics were honed during laborious tests in the wind tunnel.

Audi A4 quattro Supertouring participated in seven national championships on three continents - in Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Belgium, South Africa and Australia. And he became a winner in all seven.

Two years later, the European Racing Committee almost completely forbade the use of four-wheel drive in touring car racing: the superiority of all-wheel drive models was too obvious.

In 1999 , the triumphant era of Audi 's participation in the World Endurance Championships began. WEC (World Endurance Championship) - racing cars LMP (Le Mans Prototype) first competed in a 12-hour race in Sebring (USA).

Over the next 18 years (at the end of the 2016 year Audi officially withdraws from WEC races) four-ring prototypes took part in 186 races and won more than 100 trophies, including 13 prizes according to the results hardest racing 24 hours Le Mans.

Significant for the entire sports world was the 2006 year when the Audi R10 TDI was the first diesel car in history to win the most important daily marathon.

The car body was a carbon fiber monocoque, the chassis, engine and gearbox were made as a single unit to accelerate their emergency replacement. The motor worked so silently that the riders often could not focus on it when shifting gears.

Rules of the game

The new Formula E sports championship kicked off in September 2014 . The aim of racing electric cars is to popularize innovation and green technology. From the very beginning, the ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team has been taking part in the specially prepared Audi e-tron electric racing car.

The results are impressive: in the season 2017/2018 , the team took silver in the team competition, and the total score of victories exceeded two dozen. In the 2018/2019 season, pilots of the four latest Audi e-tron FE05 race cars are set to win.

2018

In the first four seasons, due to the limited range and the impossibility of instantly charging the batteries of electric cars during the race, the racers used two cars - A and B . After about half an hour, I got into the B car and rode on it.

Starting from the fifth season ( 2018/2019 ), a new generation car appeared - Gen2 , which allows you to pass the race distance without a transfer. However, the race became shorter: in the first four seasons they lasted from 48 minutes to an hour, from the fifth season - 45 minutes.

At the moment, 12 teams are participating in the championship, two riders each. Races are held on city roads. By analogy with Formula 1, where the races are called "Grand Prix" , the stages of Formula E are called "ePrix" . Each stage of the championship is held within one day in order to reduce costs and reduce discomfort in the host city.

According to the rules, morning is allotted to get acquainted with the track during free races, which take place in two stages: 45-minute and 30-minute. Full power (250 kW / 335 hp) is available throughout the practice.

The Qualification Session lasts one hour and is held at noon. Racers are divided into four groups of 6 people. Each group has 6 minutes to show the best time for the route, while the riders can only go through two circles - one of which is fast.

Then comes the Super Pole - the six fastest riders are fighting for "pole-position", in turn, driving a circle, starting with the sixth fastest pilot and ending with the first. Accordingly, the superpool determines the first six positions of the starting grid of the race. Full power (250 kW / 335 hp) is available throughout the entire qualification.

The race is held in the late afternoon. It starts with the grid and lasts 45 minutes plus one lap. Racers have the right to use the Attack mode system several times per race, depending on the decision of the stewards. In racing mode, power is limited to 200 kW / 270 hp

Attack Mode adds an additional 35 kW to the motor power. It is forbidden to activate the attack mode during the safety car and during the yellow flag mode along the entire route.

Formula E strive to become a series for top pilots who will come from GP2 (called Formula 2 since 2017), IndyCar, Formula 1. These are young riders with experience who are in the middle of their careers, and riders who leave Formula 1 and cannot return to GP2 / Formula 2.

Participation in the new series is attractive enough for the teams due to the environmental friendliness of machines and significantly lower cost compared to Formula-1. So, if in F-1 the maintenance of a team costs an average of 115 million pounds, then in Formula E - only 3 million. Learn more

Starting from the season 2018/2019 , a new electric car has been used, which has more improved characteristics than the last. The car is also built by Spark Racing Technology in collaboration with Dallara and is equipped with a battery manufactured by McLaren Applied Technology with a capacity of 54 kWh. Learn more

The season 2018/2019 brought the new rules of the game - the pilots used only one car during the race. Thanks to modern technology, which allowed us to create batteries with a capacity that ensures the passage of the full distance of the 45-minute race.

Since the requirements for the elements of the racing car are the same for all teams except the electric motor, inverter, gearbox, components of the rear suspension, as well as software, manufacturers have the opportunity to demonstrate skill in the development of the engine.

The engine-generator unit - Audi Schaeffler MGU03 - is a joint development of Audi and the technology partner of the brand, Schaeffler . The main goal of the engineers was to make this module even more powerful and as efficient as possible.

The rules of the fifth season of Formula E limit the maximum engine power in qualifying races to 340 hp and for the main race - 272 hp Among the innovations of this season are the so-called “activation zones”: in these zones, pilots have the opportunity to activate the mode of short-term increase in the power plant capacity to the level of 306 h.p.

Fans of Formula E will be able to support their favorite pilots by participating in the online vote of FanBoost , as a result of which the rider can get the opportunity to further increase the power plant capacity to 340 h.p.

All Formula E teams must use unified lithium-ion batteries McLaren weighing 374 kg, located between the pilot's seat and the engine. The energy reserve is 52 kWh, and the time required for charging is 45 minutes.

In the season 2018/2019 , the technical experience of the power plant of the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team will help for the first time in the cars of the British team Envision Virgin Racing - having established a car Virgin motor-generator and transmission Audi. Learn more

A fundamentally new development for the Vth season is also the electronic brake pedal system: the brake control and traction to the rear rear axle are separated and controlled by an electronic system. Thanks to this solution, it became possible to constantly maintain the optimal settings of the braking system and make the energy recovery process even more efficient.

Remarkably, the new Audi e-tron FE05 lacks a rear wing - a rarity in the world of motorsport. The downforce is provided by a volume diffuser in the lower rear of the body.Learn more
